The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially ruled out an extension for the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise, which is set to conclude on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
During an assessment tour in Meru County on Tuesday, April 21, IEBC Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan emphasized that with only seven days remaining, citizens must act quickly. He revealed that Meru had only achieved 50% of its target, with approximately 40,000 out of a projected 80,000 new voters registered by Monday evening.
“We are not giving extra time… seven days are there. Kenyans have an opportunity within these seven days to register themselves,” Commissioner Noor stated. He noted that kits have been deployed to accessible locations, including constituency offices and Huduma Centres.
County Election Manager William Ndung’u highlighted significant local hurdles that have slowed the process, specifically in the Igembe and Tigania regions:
-
ID Delays: Many residents who applied for national identification cards are still waiting for them, rendering them ineligible to register
-
Insecurity: Ongoing security concerns in specific pockets of the county have hindered movement and outreach.
-
Uncollected Documents: Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma noted that thousands of processed IDs remain uncollected at government offices.
Ndung’u added in Swahili that the lack of IDs is a major grievance: “Hatukosi changamoto hapa na pale, mojawapo ni kuwa kuna waliojiandikisha kuchukua vitambulisho na tukapata hizo vitambulisho bado zingine hazijafika… hiyo ni tatizo kubwa sana kwa wale wanategemea.” (We aren’t without challenges; one of them is that those who applied for IDs find that some have not yet arrived… that is a very big problem for those relying on them.)
The nationwide ECVR drive, themed “Deepening Democracy in Kenya Through Inclusive Voter Registration,” aims to enlist 2.5 million new voters ahead of the 2027 General Election. After the April 28 deadline, registration will revert to standard constituency offices rather than the current ward-level mobile kit system.
As of last Friday, April 17, 2026, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) recorded a total of 1,370,930 newly registered voters since the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise began on March 30.
The agency, led by Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, reported significant momentum in the drive, onboarding 495,429 new voters in the period since its previous progress update on April 9. This surge reflects intensified mobilization efforts as the commission heads into the final week of the mass registration window, which is set to close on April 28.
