Adan Mohamed Hassan was killed early on Tuesday, April 21.

Initial reports say that Adan’s friends who were arrested were linked to a sugar scandal in Garissa town.

How was Adan Hassan killed in Garissa?

According to reports, a police officer, identified as Charlo, opened fire at close range, shooting him in the head and killing him instantly.

“Those people had come from Dadaab. During their journey, the police started shooting at them. They started arresting them and begging the suspects to call their (deceased) colleague. Adan was called and answered quickly to save his friends. When he got there, he asked the officer what happened. Unfortunately, the officer told him that he had a problem with him and he took out his gun and shot him point blank,” said Ali Hassan, a friend of the deceased.

His killing has caused protest in Garissa as angry residents removed his body from the mortuary to the cell where he was allegedly killed, demanding justice.

Police fired tear gas canisters to disperse angry protesters.

“This is not the first incident. Within this year. This is the third person to be killed here. We are ready to die today. We will not form our government but we will defend ourselves. Whatever happens is cruel. We cannot sleep when you continue to kill our people. I cannot bear to see my fellow mothers crying every day,” said the protesters.

“We want the government to take immediate steps and bring the suspects to court. If not, we will take steps to protect ourselves,” Ali added.

What did the police say about Adan’s murder?

The Deputy Police Commander, John Matasi, revealed that the officers were on patrol when the incident happened.

He confirmed that the investigation into Adan’s murder is ongoing and that the officers of the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) are actively handling the matter.

“It was eight o’clock in the morning when patrol officers met the deceased and other men. There are allegations that they were together, but the other escaped. We are cooperating with IPOA as they investigate the incident. We will not hide it for anyone because we are not investigating ourselves, and this is also a very sad incident,” Matasi said.
