Kalonzo sent the message in connection with the Pope’s apostolic visit to Africa.

Why is Kalonzo asking for the prayers of Pope Leo XIV? In his message, Kalonzo praised Africa as “a continent of ancient faith, unique endurance, and boundless hope,” adding that the presence of Pope Leo is living evidence of the church’s tradition of hope and love.

“Your Holiness, on behalf of the Wiper Patriotic Front and on my own behalf, I welcome you with great respect and spirituality to the continent of Africa on your first apostolic journey as the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church. In the great tradition of the Church, we are reminded that ‘Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est,’ which means a place of love and compassion, that is where God is. Your presence among us, Holy Father, is living evidence of that holy truth,” Kalonzo said.

Although the pope’s schedule does not include Kenya, he asked Pope Leo to pray for the country, asking the nation to be blessed with lasting peace and good governance.

He emphasized that Kenya has a unique position of permanent love for the Vatican and that its citizens have faith that by God’s will the pope will be an honored guest in the country.

In addition, Kalonzo praised the pope for his steadfast leadership of peace, high respect for every human being, and the family as the first and most important school of ethics and civic life.

“We are with you in prayer and solidarity,” he said.

Kalonzo’s statements came at a time when the country is facing the challenge of high fuel costs, with the opposition accusing the President William Ruto and three senior government officials to be involved in a “historical scandal.”
