Kisumu County Police Commander Hillary Toroitich said the suspect, who identified himself as a teacher, admitted during an interview at the Maseno Police Station that he planned the killing of Apondi on April 5.

Toroitich revealed that the suspect confessed to killing the young woman after allegedly finding a WhatsApp message indicating that he planned to leave her for someone else, according to investigators.

On the day of the incident, the suspect lured Apondi from his home under the pretext of helping him get an industrial training position.

Unaware of the trap, the student reportedly left his home to meet him, the last time he was seen alive.

How much did the suspect pay his accomplices?

According to the DCI, investigations revealed that the suspect sought the help of accomplices, allegedly paying them KSh 500 to participate in the attack.

Apondi, his former lover and two of his male friends from the same institution went to drink alcohol, which left him incapacitated.

Beaten and left for dead in the bush, he was in poor condition and without a working phone when help arrived.

The police chief said it is believed that the group attacked Apondi before stabbing him to death and dumping his body in a nearby bush.

A missing person’s report filed on April 6 at the Maseno Police Station has turned into a complex case of betrayal and violence, which led to the discovery of Apondi’s body in the bush of the Riat Mountains on April 12, 2026.

Toroitich said an important breakthrough was made when investigators found the victim’s cell phone inside a sewage tank in the Mountain Area, where he worked as a social worker.

The discovery provided important clues linking the suspect to the crime, according to reports. The county police commander said investigators acted quickly to arrest the suspect, whose interview was crucial in solving the case.

“Through the interview, he admitted that he killed her and dumped the body in the bush. Officers were able to find remains and other important evidence while the investigation continues,” said Toroitich.
