Kenya Meteorological Department Warns Of Heavy Rain, 11 Counties Will Witness Flooding Until April 27

  • The Kenya Red Cross has warned residents in 11 counties to prepare for heavy rain from Wednesday, April 22, to Monday, April 27
  • The weather forecaster is predicting rainfall of more than 20 mm in 24 hours, winds of more than 25 knots, and sea waves of more than 2 meters
  • Flooding, flash flooding, and poor visibility are expected, with motorists and coastal communities urged to remain vigilant

The Kenya Red Cross has issued an advisory to residents in 11 counties where the weather forecaster has predicted heavy rain.

In the outlook issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department on Tuesday, April 21, the areas mentioned above should expect heavy rain between Wednesday, April 22, and Monday, April 27.

Heavy rain is likely to increase, with accumulations exceeding 20mm in 24 hours on the Coast, as well as parts of the North-East and South-East Lowlands.

The meteorologist further noted that the upcoming rain may be accompanied by strong winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s).

“Furthermore, sea waves are expected to reach a height of more than 2 meters along the coast,” it said.

Which counties will experience heavy rain?

Counties of concern include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, River Tana, Lamu, Garissa, parts of; – Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui and Makueni.

In its advisory, the Kenya Red Cross advised people in the above mentioned areas to be vigilant.

The humanitarian organization noted that the areas may suffer from flooding and poor visibility during the rains.

It also advised drivers to be more careful when traveling.

“People in all the mentioned areas should be alert for possible flooding, flash flooding, and poor visibility. Remember that floodwaters can occur in areas that have not received much rain, especially downstream. To ensure safety, residents are advised to avoid driving or walking in moving water or open fields, do not shelter under trees or near burned windows to reduce the risk of being affected by lightning and take precautions when participating in marine activities. In other news, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) recently confirmed the launch of the Climate Camera (ClimCam) flown to the International Space Station aboard the Northrop Grumman Cygnus XL resupply mission (NG‑24), which took off from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Center in Florida on April 11 at 1:41 p.m.

The spacecraft was scheduled to dock with the ISS on April 13 as part of its resupply mission.

Developed through a partnership between KSA, the Egyptian Space Agency, and the National Space Program of UgandaClimCam underwent configuration, integration, and testing at EgSA facilities in Cairo, followed by end-to-end validation at Airbus facilities in Houston.

Equipped with artificial intelligence capabilities, it is designed to provide near-real-time weather and climate data to support environmental monitoring, resource management, disaster preparedness, and climate resilience across East Africa.
