The newspaper reports that the death of 25-year-old Lucky Okoth while in police custody has sparked controversy and raised new questions about accountability within the justice system in Kilifi County.

Okoth was arrested on April 14 by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation over the alleged kidnapping of a 17-year-old girl.

He was brought to Malindi court, where detectives were given 30 days to complete the investigation. However, just one day later, he was found dead in a cell at the Malindi Police Station.

According to the police report, Okoth allegedly died of self-inflicted injuries after hanging himself with a rope made of cloth.

The case itself had already taken a surprising turn after the girl, who was initially reported missing, later resurfaced at her home shortly after her family sent KSh 100,000 as part of the KSh 200,000 demanded.

Investigators believe he may have spent time with the suspect before returning.

Even as police continue to investigate the alleged abduction and custodial death, the incident has left the community worried, with questions lingering about what happened behind the cell doors.

The decision, delivered by Justice Wananda Anuro, stems from a decades-long construction dispute with Vishva Builders Ltd.

The project, started in 1990, stopped due to financial constraints, forcing the contractor to pay. Years of legal battles and accrued interest have now pushed the debt to unsustainable levels.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut warned that the move threatens key activities, including staff salaries, student services and procurement, at a crucial time when the institution is preparing to enroll new students.

He described the situation as an imminent closure of the institution unless urgent government intervention is found.

The crisis reveals deeper structural challenges within the university, including declining student enrolment, reduced government funding and mounting debts estimated at KSh 8 billion.

Efforts to revive the institution through a new transformation strategy led by the council are now in the balance.

While some accounts related to scholarship and research were spared, the freeze added financial pressure to an already struggling institution.

According to the Daily newspaper, President William Ruto is facing intense political pressure as the Orange Democratic Movement increasingly asserts its position, threatening to withdraw from a comprehensive program that has been central to his plans for the 2027 repeat elections.

The crisis has revealed major cracks in the alliance between the Democratic Union (UDA) and ODM, with ODM leaders accusing the UDA of undermining the party by persuading its elected leaders to move.

The situation worsened after the ODM Central Committee suspended the coalition talks and instructed members to reduce their participation in Ruto’s re-election campaigns.

Political analysts warn that the result could leave Ruto sidelined if ODM joins the opposition, a coalition that includes the likes of Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka.

The conflict has also been fueled by disagreements over zoning, with ODM insisting its strongholds are non-negotiable, a position the UDA has vehemently rejected.

Within ODM, disillusionment has been growing, with claims that even party officials in government are being sidelined for Ruto’s political agenda.
