What started as a farewell funeral turned into a tense affair after political talk disrupted the funeral ceremony in Mwea, Kirinyaga county.

The commotion occurred during the funeral of Mzee Francis Ngari in Kiarukungu village after the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua addressing the mourners by phone, causing a conflict with the local MP Mary Maingi.

The 74-year-old deceased was the father of Michael Kinyua Ngari, the treasurer of the Mwe Irrigation Program Water Users Association.

How did Gachagua collide with Mwea MP on the phone?

The moment began when Tebere Ward MCA, Peter Karinga, informed the mourners that Gachagua wanted to speak, noting that he and the late Ngari were classmates at Kianyaga High School.

When the call was initiated, another local leader held the microphone for a while while Karinga controlled the call, allowing Gachagua to address the meeting remotely.

During his speech, Gachagua criticized the government, accusing it of policies that he claimed were hurting local farmers, including the importation of rice.

He also targeted elected officials, claiming that some of them failed to defend the interests of the community. His comments escalated when he mentioned Maingi, accusing him of supporting the government at the expense of the residents.

“The biggest problem in our society is the traitors, the leaders we elected who do not defend our people,” he said.

“They collaborate with Kasongo (Ruto) when he oppresses us. For example, your MP Mary Maingi is a traitor to society, she stays with Ruto when he oppresses us,” he added.

The words prompted a quick response from the lawmaker, who was sitting among the mourners. He stood up and shouted in protest, objecting to the statements made during the speech.

What followed was a short standoff, with Maingi going to the microphone as the leaders on the phone tried to control the situation.

The confrontation led to pushing and pulling of the microphone, temporarily interrupting the funeral program and attracting the attention of mourners.
