Fuel Prices in Kenya vs. East Africa: Kenyans Pay KSh 89 more for Petrol than Ethiopians

On Tuesday, April 14, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) released new oil prices in its latest monthly review.

The average landing cost of super fuel imports rose by 41.53%, from US$582.11 (KSh 75,266.82) per cubic meter to US$823.87 (KSh 106,526.39), according to the energy regulator.

To protect consumers from high pump charges, EPRA reduced the VAT rate on super fuel, diesel and kerosene from 16% to 13%.

“While the price of kerosene remained unchanged, the maximum permissible pump price of petrol and diesel increased by KSh 28.69 and KSh 40.30 per litre, respectively, during the review period,” EPRA said in a notice.

In Nairobi, petrol is now sold at KSh 206.97, diesel at KSh 206.81, and kerosene at KSh 152.78.

The increase in oil prices occurred following the rise in landing costs for imported oil.

The average landing cost of super petrol imports rose by 41.53%, from US$582.11 (KSh 75,266.82) per cubic meter in February 2026 to US$823.87 (KSh 106,526.39) in March 2026.

Diesel recorded an increase of 68.72%, rising from US$636.45 (KSh 82,292.99) to US$1,073.82 (KSh 138,844.93) per cubic meter, while kerosene rose by 105.15%, from US$639.48 (KSh 82,684.76) to US$1,311.93 (KSh 169,632.55).

What are the oil prices in Tanzania?

On Wednesday, April 1, the Energy and Water Regulatory Authority Tanzania (EWURA) released new fuel prices.

In the port city of Dar es Salaam, EWURA raised the price of petrol by TSh 956 (KSh 49) to TSh 3,820 (KSh 192) from TSh 2,864 (KSh 143) in March.

The price of one liter of diesel rose from TSh 2,858 (KSh 143.17) to TSh 3,806 (KSh 190.66).

Dar es Salaam, kerosene is now sold for TSh 3,684 (KSh 184.55).

What are the oil prices in Ethiopia, Uganda and Rwanda?

According to Global Petrol Prices, one liter of petrol in Ethiopia is sold at US$0.906 (KSh 117), indicating that Kenyans are paying KSh 89 more per litre.

In the country Ugandaone liter of petrol is sold for USh 5,290 (KSh 184.18), being lower than in Kenya.

In Rwanda, the cost of one liter of petrol is RWF 2,303 (KSh 203.15) while the same as US$1.35 in Burundi (KSh 174.42).

Will matatu fares rise in Kenya?

Travelers in Kenya are preparing for an increase in travel costs following EPRA’s fuel price hike.

The Association of Baggers and Transport Service Providers Kenya has announced that its members will increase fares from Wednesday, April 15.

On Tuesday, April 14, chairman Albert Karakacha said operators will implement a 30% fare increase.
