Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has condemned the Friday, July 4, 2025, attack on the opposition convoy in Chwele, Bungoma County, terming it a sign of desperation by the government.

In a statement shared via his official X account, Malala described the incident as a cowardly attempt to intimidate and silence the opposition.

“The last kicks of a dying horse; A clueless, desperate regime that resorts to violence and hooliganism to try to silence alternative voices,” Malala said.

The former senator further thanked the residents of Kimilili for their love and support, saying they had been heard loud and clear. He assured them that their call for change and a safer Kenya would not go unanswered

“Thank you, Kimilili, for your love and support. We have heard you loud and clear. Your call for change and a safer Kenya will not go unanswered,” he said.

Chwele attack

Apart from Malala, leaders from the opposition have also condemned the attack, led by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who termed the violence they witnessed in Chwele as part of the dying embers of primitive politics that no longer have a place in the country.

“What we witnessed in Chwele was the dying embers of the practice of primitive politics in Kenya. The United Opposition won’t be intimidated by your # WanTam-sanctioned stone-throwing goons. Not now, not today, not ever,” Kalonzo said.

On the other hand, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, who shared photos of the damaged cars that were stoned by unknown people, said that violence has no place in the country and that leaders who resort to brutality undermine the very foundations of good governance and true democracy.

“The people of Kimilili Constituency in Bungoma County have spoken loudly and clearly: violence and extrajudicial killings have no place in our society. Governments that thrive on violence are short-lived and lack legitimacy,” Gachagua said.

“Leaders who resort to brutality and suppression undermine the very foundations of good governance and true democracy. We must call out such actions wherever they occur and stand firm against them. Peace, justice, and respect for human rights are the pillars of a progressive society.”

Several cars in the convoy were attacked by people wielding crude weapons and stones, leaving car windows shattered in the melee that ensued.
