Kenyans Comment After EPRA Cuts Petrol and Diesel Prices to Less than KSh 200

  • Oketch mentioned the reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel products to 8% by Finance Minister John Mbadi
  • This followed an online protest by Kenyans and Opposition leaders when the cost of petrol and diesel exceeded KSh 200

On Wednesday, April 15, at night, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced new updated fuel prices.

This came following the riots by Kenyans after the prices of diesel and petrol exceeded the KSh 200 mark.

Why did EPRA reduce the prices of petrol and diesel?

In its latest review, the energy regulator reduced the cost of one liter of petrol by KSh 9.37, and the price of diesel by KSh 10.21.

EPRA said it reviewed the prices below after the Minister of National Treasury (CS) John Mbadi reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products by half from 16% to 13%, and later to 8%.

“The Minister of National Treasury has changed the rate of Value Added Tax from 13% to 8% according to Legal Notice No. 70, dated Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Based on these updated rates of Value Added Tax, we have recalculated the maximum retail pump prices that will be effective from Thursday, April 16, 2026, to Thursday, May 14, 2026,” EPRA acting director general Joseph Oketch said in a notice.

What are the new updated EPRA fuel prices?

Heavy petrol will be sold at KSh 197.60 after a slight decrease, diesel at KSh 196.83 and kerosene at KSh 152.78 in Nairobi.

Following the amendment, kerosene subsidies will stand at KSh 96.56 per litre, from KSh 108.10 per litre.

Fuel prices will be the lowest in Mombasa city with one liter of petrol being sold at KSh 194.32, diesel at KSh 193.35 and kerosene at KSh 149.49.

Following the rise in petrol prices, the Opposition leaders led by former Deputy Rigathi Gachagua they warned of national protests.

Fuel costs rose after EPRA cited disruptions in global oil supply.

Opposition leaders wanted immediate action, accusing the President William Ruto for protecting business interests in a complex oil import contract.
