Mary Wanjiru, who was only 20 months old, was left at home in the care of her older cousin, known as Linet Wangeci, who also had a young child of her own.
The children were eating sugarcane, and they quarreled, so when Wangeci’s son reported his mother, the 21-year-old woman reportedly killed Wanjiru.
According to Wanjiru’s mother, Anne Wandaki, she had gone to cut grass for her goats, and when she returned, she did not find her son.

“I started asking about my son and kept calling him, but he was not there, even after searching for him with the suspect. Wangeci was seen with the child Wanjiru on the day of the incident, and he was the first to post on Facebook about the missing child,” said the mother.
“One witness known as Kangethe said he met Wangeci with the child, and when he asked, he was told he was sleeping. He gave them a cane, and later the cane caused the two children to fight,” he added.
The father of the murdered child, Alexander Muhinja, was surprised by the barbaric act and said that he had never done anything that would lead to such an attack by his nephew.
The Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) arrived and questioned the young woman, where she confessed to killing the child and showed where she hid the body.
