The agency confirmed that the mother and baby were in good health and were treated by paramedics once the plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The agency also praised the flight attendants for their professionalism, adding that no emergency was declared during the flight.

“The organization commends the professionalism and measured response of its staff, who dealt with the situation in accordance with established procedures, and ensured the safety and comfort of all those on board,” read the press release.

Communications and air traffic control

In the audio obtained by CBS News, the pilot can be heard informing air traffic controllers about the passenger who was giving birth:

“We have a passenger, a female passenger, who is going into labor at the moment. We ask to be directed directly,” said the pilot.

“Caribbean 5, we heard you, maintain 2000 feet. Would you like paramedics at your gate? Do you know your gate now?” asked the air traffic controller.

After a while, the attendant asked if the child had already been born and even suggested a name:

“Is he out yet? Tell him to call Kennedy,” he said as he and the pilot laughed.
