The Late David Kiaraho Committee Curses Rigathi Gachagua, His Friends for Bringing Politics to the Grave

  • A group of MPs have condemned the introduction of politics into the funeral of Ol Kalou Member of Parliament, David Kiaraho, saying it robbed the service of its dignity.

  • The attacks against Ruto were led by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, who used his position to address mourners to criticize the president.

The special committee of the National Assembly formed to plan the funeral of the former member of parliament for Ol Kalou, David Kiaraho, has condemned the introduction of politics in the funeral service of their colleague held on Wednesday, April 9, at the Ol Kalou Stadium.

The event, for the first time, brought together President William Ruto and his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua.

In his position to address the mourners, Gachagua criticized him strongly Ruto.

Gachagua accused Ruto of betraying the Mount Kenya region, which contributed greatly to his 2022 victory, by approving his removal from power.

He continued to attack Ruto’s allies, including Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and the Deputy President Kithur Kindikiwho he said were traitors who let down their comrades.

Meeting a day after the funeral, the committee said the politics were baseless and robbed the funeral of its dignity.

Speaking during the evaluation meeting and giving feedback together with the security agencies, the chairman of the committee Kwenya Thuku expressed regret about the events of the service which was intended for the voters of Ol Kalou to honor their late member of parliament.

“It is a sad, unimaginable and shameful thing that politics played a central role in the honor service that was meant to give Mr. Kiaroho a dignified burial from his people,” said Kwenya.

He added;

“As a committee we condemn the hijacking of this moment of honor to spread political hatred, despite the organizing committee being generous to give the politicians a chance to address the mourners with respect.”

Citing incidents where some politicians used the platform to attack their perceived opponents, including the president, the committee warned against such behavior during the mourning service and funeral that will be held at the home of the late MP in Tigoni.

“Attacks against the Office and Person of the Head of State were not expected in such a situation where the Honorable President only came to honor the late member of parliament and apologize to his family and his voters,” complained Kwenya.

According to the committee, all people, leaders or not, deserve respect in a funeral of that magnitude.

The chairman gave a strong warning to politicians with ulterior motives to refrain from the next funeral activities towards the burial of the member of parliament.

“We cannot allow this kind of disrespect, so the perpetrators are not welcome in the funeral activities of Mr. Kiaraho. We will no longer tolerate hate speech in the funeral intended to pay respect to our comrade who left us,” said Kwenya.

How Gachagua and Ruto faced each other Ol Kalou Gachagua showed a more conciliatory attitude, showing readiness for a political agreement with the president before 2027.

He said that Ruto’s conflict with Mount Kenya voters was caused by his cooperation with leaders he described as traitors, especially Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, who accused him of misleading the president and weakening his support in the area.

Gachagua positioned himself as a key leader of Mt Kenya, urging Ruto to restore relations by distancing himself from inexperienced allies and embrace cooperation with the community.

However, Ruto rejected any possibility of reconciliation, insisting that his relationship with Mount Kenya began long before Gachagua and that he does not need anyone’s permission to associate with the area.

He accused Gachagua of promoting ethnic politics and promised to continue to unite the country through his inclusive government, clearly stating that ethnic division and hatred will not be tolerated under his leadership.
