Survivors of the accident in Nyeri that claimed the lives of 16 people have painfully described the ordeal they went through while receiving treatment at the hospital. The tragic incident, involving a truck and threehappened on Saturday, March 28, and left the nation in deep sorrow.

News of the accident spread quickly, with many Kenyans expressing their condolences to the victims and calling on the government to take action.
Among the survivors was a lorry driver, who narrated what happened on the Nyeri-Nyahururu Road while he was receiving treatment at the hospital.
“Two cyclists were coming towards me. By the time I realized, they were very close. The first thing I thought was to avoid them so I wouldn’t hit them. When I tried to avoid them, the truck overturned. I found myself stuck in the truck by my leg. I struggled to free myself while people came to help me, and finally I was able to save myself,” said Ken Waweru at the Nyeri County Referral Hospital.
Tragedy strikes when two men enjoy yogurt
Another woman who survived, lay in bed in the hospital in pain as she recounted the horrific incident that nearly cost her life.
He said he suffered injuries to his hand and head, and doctors had to extract two of his front teeth following the incident that happened nine days ago.
Henry Gatiba, another survivor, said he and his friend were returning from collecting firewood at the Chingati factory in Othaya.
On the way, they stopped for a short time at a roadside hut near the former President’s farm Mwai Kibakiwhere they bought yogurt.
Just a few minutes, about 10, after starting to enjoy the yogurt, disaster struck.

“I was just sitting quietly in the car. Suddenly, we heard a big explosion, then screams followed,” he said.
His friend, who also survived, added that they do not remember exactly what happened after that. Gatiba’s friend remembered hearing residents saying that he was alive and needed to be rescued quickly and taken to hospital immediately.
Deputy President Kithur Kindiki he visited the survivors in the hospital to inform them of their condition and comfort them following the terrible incident.
NTSA should increase efforts after the accident in Nyeri
The survivors’ accounts came as seven of the 16 people who lost their lives were laid to rest on Tuesday, April 7, in an emotional ceremony.
Emotions ran high in Kabiri Stadium during the funeral service, while the families of those who lost their loved ones called for the strengthening of road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“May God heal our broken hearts. May God bless us and heal us,” said one of the family members who lost their loved ones.
Amid the rise in road accidents and uncertainty over the National Road Safety and Transport Authority (NTSA)’s sudden fines, survivors are calling for improved safety measures.
