Edith Katende Mufumbiro died shortly after 3am, following what relatives described as a long and heroic battle against cancer.
Where is Mufumbiro kept?
Her death has left a heavy shadow of sadness over her family and also in political circles, not only because of the loss itself, but also because her husband, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, was not close to her in her last moments.
Mufumbiro, who is the Deputy Speaker of the National Unity Platform political party, is currently detained in Luzira Upper Prison.
The leader of the party, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known by his stage name Bobi Wine, announced that Mufumbiro has been held for several months on charges he claims are baseless.
According to Bobi Wine, his repeated requests for bail, including requests to attend to his wife who was in a bad situation, were rejected.
Friends and colleagues say the couple’s ordeal has been public and private at the same time.

Why was Mufumbiro arrested?
They claim that on February 12, 2025, the date linked to the alleged “illegal mining” at the party’s headquarters, Mufumbiro was actually at the Mulago Cancer Institute, accompanying his wife for treatment.
Edith’s death is not only a tragedy, but also a story of separation — of a husband unable to comfort his wife as her condition worsened, and of a family forced to endure grief divided by prison walls.
“As difficult as it is, we still have hope that one day we will win,” the opposition leader wrote. “May God give the family, especially our brother Waiswa, the strength he needs at this time.”
Now, as preparations for Edith’s funeral begin, attention has turned to the emotional impact on her husband, who will have to mourn from afar.
For many, the image is very sad: a man who mourns his wife alone in a prison cell, missing tradition, the comfort of a hug, and the conclusion that comes with tragedy.
Despite the grief, those close to the family say they are holding on to faith. For now, however, the grief is immediate and intense.
Kizza Besigye is still being detained
Another politician in prison in Uganda is veteran opposition leader and four-time presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye.
Besigye has been in detention for more than a year and, on several occasions, has been taken to hospital under strict security for treatment.
The fierce critic of the government was arrested on November 16, 2024, charged with treason in a military court, and later detained in Luzira Prison.
His long detention has been heavily criticized by human rights activists and opposition leaders, who accuse the government of ignoring court rulings.
