Key challenges hindering dairy farming in Vihiga – Kenya News Agency

Dairy farmers in Vihiga Sub County  are set to enjoy a ready market for their milk produce following the launch of Wema Dairy cooperative society  in Manyatta area.

Speaking during the launch, County Director of Veterinary Services Dr Darlington Kadenge noted  the farmers are also expected to earn more from their agricultural activities due to value addition of their yields.

Dr Kadenge at the same time said farming in the county faces several challenges, key among them being poor livestock quality due to low uptake of improved breeding practices.

He said many farmers have not embraced modern breeding technologies, which are essential in improving the quality and productivity of dairy animals.

Vihiga Governor Wilberforce Ottichillo takes part in the launch of a livestock vaccination programme in Vihiga County.

The director also pointed out inadequate market access for milk as a major concern, noting that most dairy cooperatives in the county have not developed capacity for value addition.  “As a result, farmers are unable to maximize profits from milk production,” he said.

Kadenge, however, welcomed the establishment of Wema Dairy Cooperative Society, terming it a timely intervention that will provide a ready market for milk and promote value addition.

He also identified livestock diseases as a major contributor to reduced dairy productivity, adding that the county has intensified vaccination programmes to curb the challenge.

Recently, the County introduced an e-voucher vaccination programme against Foot and Mouth Disease to improve disease control. Kadenge urged farmers to take advantage of the vaccination programme to safeguard their livestock.

He emphasized the need for proper animal husbandry practices, including adequate feeding, use of supplements, proper housing, and disease prevention for enhanced production.
