AFCON 2027: Benni McCarthy Targets Bundesliga Players To Strengthen Harambee Stars

McCarthy, of late, has taken a step forward in persuading foreign players of Kenyan descent to pledge their international allegiance to Harambee Stars.

The South African coach, who has been in charge for over a year now, admitted that the national team needs players who compete in a strong league to grow ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Since being humiliated 8-0 by Senegal, McCarthy has traveled to Europe where he has successfully recruited Zech Obiero, Tyler Onyango and Zak Vyner.

Benni McCarthy targets Bundesliga players

The former coach of Manchester United he has now set his sights on Germany as he looks for more players in his AFCON 2027 programme.

“From Kenya to Germany, because as I said, there is a boy in Bayern Munich’s under-21 team, who is also training with the first team. There is one in FC Cologne and another in Hoffenheim. And then there is another who plays in Bundesliga Two. So yes, we have good boys – five or so – who if we can get them and add them to the team, things will improve,” he told iDiski Times.

Which Bundesliga players can play for Harambee Stars?

Player of Bayern Munich The U21 is Sadiki Chemwor, who recently signed for Eintracht Frankfurt. He will change clubs once his Bayern contract expires at the end of the season.

Chemwor, who started his career at TSV Milbertshofen before joining Bayern’s academy, will start with Frankfurt’s under-21 team before progressing through the ranks. He has played 55 matches for the Bayern U17 and U19 teams, scoring eight goals and providing 12 assists.

McCarthy will also target Linton Maina, who was born in Berlin to a Kenyan father and a German mother. Maina currently plays for Koln in the Bundesliga, where they are in 15th place, two points above the relegation zone.

Another player McCarthy will talk to is Andre Kenete Gitau, who has already represented the US youth teams and is currently playing for Mainz’s reserve team in Germany. His parents are Kenyans.

“They’re top players, top level. So yeah, the better team you can recruit, the more chances we have to be successful,” added McCarthy.

Earlier, Mcacrthy’s new player, Zech Obiero, expressed his happiness after playing his first match for Harambee Stars against Estonia.

Obiero, whose father played for Harambee Stars, was born in England. He set up Ryan Ogam’s equaliser, but Kenya lost on penalties after the match.
