Meru: Ex-Prisoner Kamiti Arrested on Allegations of Online Crime, Found with 39 SIM Cards

Meru: Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation and the Kenya Police Service have arrested a cybercrime suspect in Igembe North sub-county.

Supervising the investigation, officers led by the OCS and the sub-county criminal investigation officer conducted a swift operation in the Irindii Laare area on April 7, leading to the arrest of Morris Kithinji Tirimiti.

“Success has been recorded in the fight against cybercrime following the successful arrest of a suspected fraudster,” the DCI said in a statement.

According to investigations, Timiti, an ex-convict, is believed to be at the center of suspected digital activities in the area.

He was previously imprisoned for 12 years in Kamiti and Naivasha prisons for causing serious harm.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed a disturbing history. The suspect is no stranger to facing the law, he previously served 12 years in prison in Kamiti and Naivasha prisons after being found guilty of causing serious harm,” the DCI said.

Detectives conducted a thorough search and found six mobile phones suspected of being used in fraudulent activities and 39 SIM cards (33 registered under Safaricom PLC and 6 Airtel lines).

“The arrest marks an important step in dismantling suspected fraud networks operating in the region, as authorities warn the public to be vigilant against emerging digital fraud,” the DCI added.

Detectives from DCI Igembe North took up the case and launched an investigation to identify Tirimiti’s possible accomplices, find the victims, and reveal the full extent of the suspect’s activities.

At the same time, the DCI reiterated its commitment to protect the public from criminals and asked anyone with information about fraudulent activities to report anonymously to the nearest police station through the free phone line, 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp at 0709 570 000.
