The letter, written by the national chairman Gladys Wangawants Sifuna to explain why he has been ignoring the party’s official position on various issues and why no action should be taken. This step comes two months after the party started the process to remove him from power.
Why Edwin Sifuna is being investigated by ODM
According to the party, Sifuna’s conduct is a disciplinary matter and will be dealt with accordingly. He is accused of five offenses which the party says can be punished.
“This process is based on the principles of natural justice, including the right to be heard (audi alteram partem) and the necessity to follow the procedures of justice. Therefore, it does not run itself but is the beginning of a disciplinary process based on the constitution,” said Gladys Wanga.
He is alleged to have appeared in a television interview in July last year where he announced that the cooperation agreement between ODM and the ruling party United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is dead.
According to Wanga, the statement “was against the decisions of the party bodies, thus weakening the joint position and authority of the party.”
Sifuna is also accused of continuing to oppose party decisions despite participating in the meetings that passed them.
“Despite participating in party meetings and publicly presenting the party’s decisions as secretary general, including the decisions of 16 and 27 October 2025 and 13 November 2025, you later made conflicting statements in various platforms, which caused confusion and weakened the unity of the institution,” said Wanga.
Other reasons for suspicion against Sifuna
The Nairobi senator is also accused of participating in political activities unrelated to the party, including starting the “Linda Mwananchi” program and cooperating with politicians from opposing parties.
In addition, he was criticized for not attending important party meetings.

“After receiving and analyzing your responses, you will be brought before a panel appointed by the National Central Committee (NEC), in accordance with the internal dispute resolution system (IDRM), for a hearing and decision on this issue on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 4:00 am, in a location to be announced later,” the letter read.
Sifuna warned that failure to respond within the set time will result in action being taken in a manner that the party deems appropriate.
This move comes a week after Sifuna rejected any possibility of joining the faction that supports Siaya senator, Oburu Oginga.
Why Sifuna does not want to work under Oburu Oginga
Speaking at the “Linda Mwananchi” meeting at Ufungano Hall on Friday, March 27, Sifuna said he will not recognize Oburu as ODM leader, accusing him and his allies of handing over the party to the President William Ruto.
He claimed that the leadership confirmed at the special delegates meeting was not valid and vowed not to serve under Oburu, saying ODM has lost its original status.
Sifuna criticized the process that promoted Oburu after the death of Raila Odinga in October 2025, claiming leadership plans were underway even before Raila’s body arrived from India.
He questioned the legality of the move and emphasized that the ODM constitution requires a transparent election process, not unilateral decisions.
Referring to the local elections he participated in, Sifuna said the delegates who gathered at Ufungano House were legitimate, unlike the rival meeting held at Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong road.
He warned that ignoring the national elections undermines ODM’s democratic foundations and officially declared that the alternative assembly was not valid as secretary general.
Initially, Sifuna’s removal was stopped by the Political Party Disputes Court which ordered ODM to first use its internal mechanisms to deal with the matter.
