The family of Kennedy Olilo Obura has been left in pain and confusion since the night their son’s life was cut short.
Why did Kennedy Olilo travel to Diani?
In protest the latest in Mombasa, the family recalled the day Olilo traveled from Mtwapa to Diani in November 2023 for what was expected to be a happy occasion.
He had been invited to be the best man in the wedding of Miss Lauren Lotruglio and her husband, identified only as Carlos. However, the ceremony never took place.
According to information gathered by the family, Kennedy was last seen having dinner with the couple at a hotel on the evening of November 5, 2023.
The next day, he was reportedly taken to a private residence where he was locked up. By the next day, his body was found in the bathroom lying in a pool of blood.
A foreign citizen is involved in the case
Since that tragic event, the circumstances of his death have left many questions unanswered.
Although the local police took statements from the two men, the family says important mistakes may have affected the investigation.
Olilo’s father, James Obura Obonyo, called for the return of Lauren Lotruglio, a key figure they believe can help reveal the truth about the death.
The grieving father claims that Lotruglio, a Belgian national, was among the last people to see his son alive.
“We are asking him to return to Kenya to help with the investigation,” he wrote, his words carrying the weight of sadness and determination.

Why is Olilo’s family accusing the police?
The family questioned the decision to allow Lotruglio to leave the country just three days after the incident, on November 9, despite being seen as a key suspect.
His passport, which had previously been handed over to the authorities, was later returned to him and allowed him to leave the country. For the Obura family, that was the beginning of great doubt.
Their concern increased in June 2024 when they wrote to Martin Nyuguto claiming that there were flaws in the way witness statements were handled.
In particular, they claim that important parts of the detailed statement given by Olilo’s uncle were removed during the official recording.
“The officer recorded only part of the information, ignoring the important elements needed in the case,” said Mr. Obonyo, questioning whether the whole truth is sincerely sought.
Olilo’s family is still seeking justice
After two years without hope of justice, Olilo’s family says they have been abandoned by the system that was supposed to protect them.
Their call to the authorities is not only for cooperation, but also a cry for responsibility to restore momentum in the case they fear is being lost.
Still waiting for answers, Kennedy’s loved ones continue to hold on to hope that justice, though delayed, will not be denied.
