Kenya Pipeline plot to recapture continental crown after 20-year wait

Kenya Pipeline Women’s Volleyball Club head coach Geofrey omondi is out to snap the club’s 20 year wait for the Africa Women’s Volleyball club championship scheduled April 13th-23rd in Cairo, Egypt.

Kenya pipeline alongside  DCI  and KCB will carry  the nation’s flag in the 14 team championship which has eluded Kenyan Clubs since KCB were crowned winners of the 2022 edition.

Kenya pipeline last won the title in 2005 finishing in second and third positions in the 2024 and 2025 respectively.

‘’It will mean history because that’s a long time since we won it,it’s a big trophy in Africa and it opens a way for us to go and compete in the world club championship so we are really going for it’’,remarked Pipeline head coach Geoffrey Omondi.

The multiple Kenya Volleyball Federation Women’s Volleyball league champions  will be targeting to go one better despite the stiff opposition expected  from  regular title challengers including defending champions Al Ahly.

‘’We have a plan this time, we have improved on our speed of play as well as sharpened our accuracy of the tactics and the ball control, this will give us an edge over our rivals. I know that our opponents  are also working day and night but this team is not sleeping we wake up at 6am to go for the training’’,Omondi  added.

Team captain Gladys Ekaru who will be making her 6th appearance in the continental competition declared the club was ready for the championship.

‘’The team is ready every player is mentally prepared. We have worked on our mistakes, we lost it narrowly in 2025 and we have rectified that and we are ready to go’’,Ekaru pointed out.

The squad boasts of youth and experience, a combination that  experienced Left attacker Noel Murambi, set to feature in her 10th Africa Club championship, believes is poised to work in their favor.

‘’I know that I have a big role to play in the team, I will do my best and help the team. The magic that this team has is the younger players as well the presence of senior players and that’s a very good thing in the team since we are mentoring the young to take over after the seniors are retired’’,Murambi quipped.

Geoffrey Omoondi who also doubles up as the head coach of the national women’s team Malkia Strikers backed Murambi’s view saying:

‘’The mix of experience and the junior gives us an edge because Pipeline is not just for today its also for the future’’.

17- year old left attacker Milka Akinyi is one of the budding talents whose set to make the Cairo trip.

‘’I man very happy to be with this big club,I am learning a lot from my senior teammates,it was my dream to play in the top flight but did not imagine I could go to Africa championship aged 17’’,Milka Akinyi remarked.

Kenya pipeline managing director Joe Sang while flagging off the team on Wednesday challenged the club to put its best foot forward during the two week competition.

‘’This year we are going for nothing less but number one and we are having the motto bring the title back to kenya.A game of volleyball is not won by an individual it’s a collective effort, that’s why team work is very important so I urge the team to observe the three T’s.Teamwork Trust and Tenacity’’ The Md averred.

The Company wetted the appetite of the players promising lucrative bonusses if they went all the way.If they get to the semi final the team will receive Ksh.1Million while a finalists position will see the team receive Ksh.2Million.

”As a way of motivating them we will be giving them a token, and one of the bigger motivations is if they get to the semi finals, and final as well winning we have a commitment for the team’’,Sang stated

The travelling 14 member playing unit and 5 technical bench members are expected to be named on 7TH April ahead of their departure two days later.
