Sheila Chebet, a 20-year-old student studying mortuary science at KMTC Nyeri, met her boyfriend Vincent Bet, a fourth-year student at Karatina University, on Saturday, March 28 at a club in town.

Kamau later explained what happened during the time they were together until he got the news of Chebet’s death.

He said they were in a club where Vincent and his girlfriend were drinking.

“After staying at the club for a while, Vincent sent me a message via WhatsApp asking if he could bring his girlfriend there, and I agreed,” he said.

The four continued to Edwin’s house, about two kilometers from the town of Karatina.

CCTV footage on the road showed Edwin and his girlfriend leading the way at 12:47 pm (6:47 pm), followed by Vincent and Chebet, who appeared to be drunk at the time.

What happened between Vincent Bet and Sheila Chebet?

According to Edwin, the suspect asked to sleep with his girlfriend at his house, explaining that he lives far away, about 15 kilometers from Karatina University, and he did not have the fare to take them there.

As a result, Edwin and his girlfriend went out to the market, leaving the two couples at home.

“If you have visitors, they should tell you when they want to leave, but Vincent didn’t do that. When we came back from the market, Vincent and the girl were not there,” he explained.

Later that evening, Vincent calls Edwin claiming they were attacked, then suddenly hangs up.

Worried, Edwin sent him a message asking who attacked them and where Chebet was. Vincent replied saying he left the girl with the attackers and ran away with his phone.

The suspect later claimed he lost his way and could not return to Edwin’s house. Worried, Edwin asked him to send his live location, which showed he was about 2.8 kilometers away—not far from where Chebet’s body was later found.

In their WhatsApp conversation, Vincent asked why Edwin did not warn him about the insecurity in the area and said he would report the matter to the police the next day.

The next morning, the suspect arrived at the Karatina Police Station claiming that he was attacked and robbed.

“My neighbors said they heard a noise in my house, the girl telling Vincent that she lied to him about having money. Saturday was the first time I saw Chebet, and unfortunately, the last,” said Edwin.
