Nairobi Mother Serves 30 Years in Prison for Failing to Prosecute Rafikiye for Planning a Crime

  • Seventeen years ago, Mama Sharon agreed to keep her best friend’s darkest secret, a decision she now regrets
  • A few weeks later, he realized the magnitude of his crime when he was arrested, brought to trial, and sentenced to life imprisonment
  • Being in prison has given him time to reflect on the decision that changed his life forever, painfully reminding him that the people you hang out with can affect your destiny.

For 17 years, Peris, known to many as Mama Sharon, has been held in the Women’s Prison of Eldoretserving a prison term for a decision he now deeply regrets.

Locked inside the high-security facility, his story is one of disorientation, difficult consequences, and a costly lesson about the power of influence.

Why was Peris imprisoned?

Raised in a religious family, Peris lived on the basis of discipline and faith. But his life took a different turn when he moved to Nairobi to seek new opportunities.

It was there, he says, that he ran into bad friends—a relationship that ultimately changed the course of his life.

According to the Love Beyond Bars Foundation, a close friend named Eleanor, along with her two siblings, approached her in need of financial support.

Having faith in them, Peris lent them money and even allowed them to use his car. However, he did not fully understand the gravity of the situation he was entering at that time.

Later, authorities determined that Peris had knowledge of the assassination plot but did not report it. That inaction cost him dearly. In 2009, he was found guilty of the conspiracy and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Will Peris be released?

Years later, his sentence was reduced to 30 years following an appeal. If all goes according to plan, Peris will be released in 2030, after more than two decades in prison.

Now reflecting on his journey, he explains clearly about the decisions that led him to prison. His message is clear and strong: the people you associate with can make or break your life.

“It is always important to ask God to help you choose the right friends,” he says. “Bad people can ruin your future.”

Within the prison walls, Peris has spent many years coming to terms with the past while trying to rebuild the meaning of life.

A Nairobi man is sentenced to death after an appeal

When Peris has luck his life sentence reduced to 30 years after a successful appeal, Daniel Njihia Miano regrets his decision to challenge the previous sentence.

In his efforts to find justice, he faced the painful truth made clear by the judge of the Supreme Court of the United States, Oliver Wendell Holmes: that the court is a court of law, not of justice.

After serving 13 years of his original 14-year sentence for robbery, he was sentenced to death after his efforts to challenge the sentence failed.

Miano had been charged with the crime of armed robbery contrary to Section 296 (2) of the Penal Code in the Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court in Nyahururu in September 2010.
