He attributed the situation to the broad political structure created by the late former prime minister over the years.

Mwangi said the current controversies cannot be viewed in isolation, saying they highlight how Raila managed his political activities, including his professional relationship with the President William Ruto.

He explained that the internal tension in ODM is due to a long-term division between two ideological camps within Raila’s circle, one driven by diplomacy and organized political cooperation, and the other defined by a more radical, activist stance.

Mwangi emphasized that both parties are legitimate extensions of Raila’s political identity.

“What we are facing today is a battle between two wings of Raila, the political and diplomatic wing and the militant group. Raila was a multi-faceted political figure, and each group represents a different aspect of his legacy,” Mwangi said.

Was Sifuna Raila’s strategy to withdraw from the contract with Ruto?

He further noted that the pro-rebel group, which he linked to Sifuna, has historically intervened when talks have stalled, acting as a strategic alternative.

“Raila wouldn’t get involved in anything without an exit strategy. If things didn’t work out, or if there was a conflict with the corporate side, he would turn to the militia group and rally them as a return,” he said.

Mwangi’s remarks come at a time when a rift within ODM is visible as Sifuna hinted at withdrawing under the leadership of Oburu Oginga.

Speaking at a separate meeting from ODM called the ‘People’s’ National Delegates Convention (NDC) at the Ufungano House, the Nairobi senator revealed that he cannot serve under a leadership that has faded to a level following the death of g Raila.

Will Sifuna continue as Secretary General of ODM under Oburu?

Expressing pride in serving under Raila, Sifuna questioned whether he should continue in the post under the new administration.

His remarks have been widely interpreted as a possible resignation or refusal to serve.

However, Sifuna maintained that leadership positions are decided by the people, saying that losing office will not reduce his political importance.

He added that he does not deserve the position, acknowledging the presence of other capable leaders within ODM, but stressed that any attempt to replace him must fully comply with the party’s constitution.
