Nyeri: 4 people died in an accident after a truck carrying timber collided with Matatu

At least 15 people have been confirmed dead in an accident near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County on Saturday evening, March 28.

According to sources, a truck carrying firewood overturned and hit a public utility vehicle, killing four people on the spot.

Many injured people were rushed to the Nyeri County Referral Hospital.

The Nyeri County Department of Gender and Social Services announced the dispatch of rescuers to the scene.

“Our Rescue Team under Disaster Risk Management is currently dealing with an accident near Dedan Kimathi University. We thank you for your quick response,” it said.

In another statement, Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga confirmed that the number of deaths has increased to 12.

The head of the county explained that what aggravated the rescue efforts was the PSV passenger getting stuck inside.

“It is unfortunate that the passengers in the Nissan were stuck inside and all efforts to save all fourteen were unsuccessful. I urge drivers to be more careful now that the rain has damaged parts of our roads and left many potholes. Once again, our condolences to these families,” he said.
