The tragedy occurred when a passenger bus plunged into the Padma River at Daulatdia Ghat while waiting to board a ferry on Wednesday, March 25.
According to witnesses, the affected bus drove up to the ferry pontoon and collided with its structure, causing the driver to lose control.
A few seconds later, the bus overturned and fell into the river, sinking about nine meters with 40 passengers inside.

How the passenger bus sank in the Padma River
A video surfaced online showing the horrific scene when the bus plunged into the river, causing many deaths. It showed the bus overturning on its side as screams could be heard from those inside and outside.
For a moment, it looked as if the bus was being held by the iron structure of the ferry, but its weight pulled it down and caused a huge explosion of water.
Onlookers rushed to the river bank, watching helplessly as the bus disappeared under the water. A few seconds later, the passengers who had managed to get out of the bus were seen swimming up one by one.

Those on the edge gave them ropes and long scarves, pulling them to safety while others continued to swim towards them. Bags, suitcases and other belongings of the passengers also floated on the water.
Rescue equipment was thrown into the river, while other rescuers approached in boats, trying to save as many people as possible. The cries and screams of children were heard as the incident continued.
For luck good, almost half of the passengers were able to save themselves by swimming to safety, while several others remained trapped inside the sinking bus.

According to Dewan Sohel Rana, a fire official, rescue teams responded quickly, with four fire brigades and ten divers leading the operation.
The army, police, coast guard and local authorities also joined the rescue effort, despite strong currents and heavy rains making the work difficult and slow.
By the morning of Thursday, March 26, rescuers had recovered 22 bodies from inside the bus, including six men, 11 women and five children. Two more women later died from injuries after being rescued, bringing the death toll to 24.
The bus plunged into the Nairobi River
Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported that several people lost their lives after a bus carrying 32 passengers headed Kawangware plunged into the Nairobi River.
The tragic accident on October 7, 2025 involved a Latema Sacco bus traveling on the road to Gatina.
A large crowd gathered at the scene, while some people climbed on top of the wreckage of the bus in an urgent effort to rescue the passengers who were trapped inside.
