The video clip, recorded on Wednesday, March 25, in MEA Lecture Hall 001, shows two students attacking two others while a lecturer looks on helplessly.

The lecturer remained in a chair holding a piece of paper next to the whiteboard, while the two fierce students clashed with each other as the class-goers looked on.

“What is your problem? You have come to cause chaos in the classroom,” one of the attacking students shouted.

Minutes after the violent incident, calm was restored in the lecture hall as the two attacked students were dragged out of the classroom.

As the video went viral, rumors arose, with different explanations swirling around as to what caused the incident.

Why Masinde Muliro students attacked their peers

Other reports indicated that the attackers were student leaders who were angry about not receiving support in the recent elections.

However, these claims were not confirmed, and other sources claimed that the incident was not related to the student election.

One student, identified as Tom Shelby on Facebook, said the two students who were attacked had been sent out of the lecture hall for being drunk.

He explained that they returned, insulting the lecturer, prompting two others to intervene.

“The boys came to class drunk. The lecturer asked them to leave. After they left, they came back insulting the lecturer and causing more chaos. When they were pushed out again, they started acting,” Shelby said.

The Registrar of Educational Affairs acknowledged the incident and urged students to remain calm and continue attending classes.

“The University administration has received a report that there was a disturbance during a lecture in the MEA 001 Lecture Hall on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 25, 2026. While the investigation into the incident is ongoing, we assure you that normal activities at the University are continuing. Students are encouraged to continue attending their classes and follow all University Rules and Regulations according to the Student Handbook,” said the memo.

Several leaders have condemned the incident and asked the university to take strict action.

Nairobi County Officer Geoffrey Mosiria also criticized the act, noting that violence should not be tolerated, especially in schools.

He asked the Ministry of Education to intervene and remove the perpetrators from the institution.

“Now the victims are suffering from injuries, while the perpetrators walk freely while the administration remains silent and seems to protect them. I call on the police to take immediate action and arrest these criminals. If they are not controlled, they will turn the university into a den of gangs,” he said.
