Speaking in England, where he met with Kenyans living there, Karua called them his comrades, even outside Kenya’s borders.
Addressing the diaspora communities in London, Nottingham, Northampton, and Oxford during his five-day visit to the UK, Karua dismissed comments that the impact of the diaspora is limited by their small number of voters, saying instead that their strength lies in their ability to guide and influence the choices of their families and parties in Kenya.
“Singing Wantam alone won’t bring about the change we want; that’s just a statement of intent. We have to go beyond the song and put in the effort, and that starts by talking to the people around you.”
During his five-day visit to the UK, which saw Karua speak on education policy at Oxford University on Monday, March 23, he stressed that Kenyans abroad are equal citizens with rights and responsibilities to shape national dialogue and policies.
Emphasizing the role of Kenyans living abroad in Demonstration of Generation Z in 2024 and 2025, said that the claim that people living in the diaspora do not have the numbers or understanding to influence elections is a “scary tactic” to exclude dissenting voices.
“For those living abroad, you have more votes than you know. The votes we are looking for before the 2027 elections are more than the ones you cast here. Although they are important, those are very few. We are looking for votes you can influence here in Kenya. You have friends; you have parties; you have people you support. People who believe, because you have been bought by the other world, you know very well.”
Insisting that every Kenyan voice is important for the “liberation” of the country, Karua, who has officially announced his bid for the presidency, pointed out that Kenyans living abroad feel a strain in their pockets when the administration fails at home.
He stressed that when the government falters, families abroad are forced to step in as a private safety net, funding broken systems and social protection.
“When things are going well in Nairobi, they are also going well for you here, because your families at home will not bother you too much to give subsidies to failing systems. When your loved ones are facing hunger at home, or when they lose their lives and property in floods, you are the first to know, because they ask you for help.”
Karua was in England where he delivered a keynote address at the Oxford Education Research Conference, held at Harris Manchester College, part of the historic Oxford University in Oxford, England.
