This development was communicated to the Kenyan clergy through Archbishop Bert Van Megen, Apostolic Nuncio in Kenya.

Who will take over the administration of the diocese of Wote?

According to the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Kariuki has been battling an undisclosed illness, which prevented him from fully performing his duties.

Rvt. Simon Peter Kamomoe, the pontiff of Wote, was appointed and given responsibility for the formation and administration of the diocese during the transition period.

“Father Kariuki has faced health challenges, which has increased support from the support leadership within the diocese. His resignation, which has now been accepted by the Holy Father, completes a preparatory reflection – guided by responsibility to a group of believers and loyalty to the mission of the Church,” said the statement.

Kamomoe needs to continue his journey of faith without interruption and maintain stability while waiting for the appointment of a new priest of the diocese.

Kariuki, aged 63, was installed as the first priest of the diocese on July 22, 2023, and ordained on September 30 of the same year.

Prior to his appointment to Wote, pope Kariuki served as priest of Embu from 2009 to 2023, where he was known for his spiritual leadership and institutional development.

He also served as the chairman of the Catholic Health Commission of Kenya and managed various health centers managed by the church.

In Wote, he emphasized evangelization, catechetical formation, and he frequently stressed unity among believers. He also advocated development and respect for communities facing economic challenges.

“As the believers of Wote and the wider church in Kenya receive this news, they are invited to accompany this period with prayer, thanks for the ministry of Father Kariuki, and hope for the future,” KCCB said.

The church administrator, James Wa Makumbi, announced his departure from the Ruiru headquarters, while the vice pastor, Teddy Greatness, resigned from the church’s Nyahururu branch.

Kiengei was a critic of the president until the beginning of 2026, when he changed his position and started questioning the critics of the president, which caused a debate among Kenyans.

As a sign of solidarity, Ruto attended the church’s third anniversary celebration and donated KSh 8 million to help the children.
