President William Rutoin recent weeks, has increased the pace of commissioning many projects across the country, with some in the political class accusing him of using them as campaign tools.

Why is Edwin Sifuna warning Kenyans?

During the Senate hearings, Sifuna raised concerns about increasing insecurity and what he called the wrong priorities under the Ruto administration.

He stressed that development projects such as railways and stadiums, although important, should not overshadow important tasks.

In his remarks, Sifuna emphasized that Kenya’s development must focus on the well-being of its citizens rather than only visible infrastructure.

He called on Kenyans to critically evaluate the government’s actions and not be swayed by what he called “shiny projects” at the expense of essential services.

“What is going on in this country is unacceptable and we want all Kenyans to know that you should not be fooled by those shiny things like railways and stadiums. We need to put in place a government that will put the safety and well-being of all Kenyans before everything else…we continue to urge that this country can never have shiny things. You are building our railways. It is ours after all. It is our money,” Sifuna said.

He asked for a change in priorities, saying the country must focus on building systems that ensure safety, dignity and access to basic services for all.

What security issues did Sifuna highlight?

Sifuna further mentioned the recent incidents of insecurity across the country, including the reported killing of four people by bandits in Ginda, Saku state in Marsabit county.

According to Sifuna, the situation shows the gap between the direction of the Ruto government and the reality facing the citizens.

He echoed the sentiments of Vihiga senator Godfrey Osotsi, who had warned about criminal gangs allegedly attacking parts of Vihiga county.

The Nairobi senator also spoke about the discovery of bodies in a mass grave in Kericho, noting that the authorities have not yet given clear answers about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He questioned how serious security gaps persist even as government officials express confidence in surveillance capabilities.

“The minister responsible for internal affairs tells us that he knows where each of us sleeps and who we sleep with. That he has directed us to his attention in the political class. That he can know where Sifuna is sleeping and who we have slept with. But he cannot tell you as the minister of internal affairs how someone can secretly enter the KNH ward and stab the patient and kill the patient in bed,” he asked.

Sifuna questioned the presence of police vehicles in Narok during a meeting attended by MPs, including himself and Osotsi, as well as the continued deployment of police outside a restaurant associated with a former Cabinet Minister Raphael Tuju along Ngong Road.

Why did Sifuna question the government’s role in Nairobi Hospital?

Sifuna objected to the remarks made by the Minister of Internal Affairs Dating Murkomen about the surveillance capabilities of the government.

He compared the allegations to what he described as a clear failure to protect citizens, including the recent incident where a patient was reportedly killed in a ward at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Beyond security, the senator criticized the state of public health, singling out the Kenyatta National Hospital as an example of systemic challenges.

He explained the ongoing shortage of essential supplies such as blood, test reagents, medicines and even food for patients.

The MP highlighted the frequent breakdown of important equipment, including CT scanners, dialysis machines and radiotherapy machines which he said had not been used for several months.

Sifuna questioned the government’s decision, especially its involvement in the affairs of Nairobi Hospital, a private facility.

He said that it is unclear how the government can justify interfering with a private institution while public hospitals continue to suffer.

“We have a queue Kenyatta. People are sleeping on the floor. There is no ward. And then you go and tell us that you are the guard of the private center and therefore you will take it.,” he added.

Why is Sifuna opposing Ruto?

Elsewhere, Sifuna, while continuing the movement of Linda Mwananchi, showed that the plan was aimed at removing Ruto from power and possibly making him a one-term president.

He said the group, made up of ODM rebels and other opposition figures, was committed to mobilizing support before the 2027 elections.

According to the group, Ruto’s administration was characterized by bad governance, including allegations of corruption, kidnapping and illegal activities. Sifuna added that he was ready to work with a broad opposition coalition to strengthen efforts to oppose the president in the next election.
