They say they want to use their numbers to bring meaningful change in the country.

Currently, they are gathering under the banner of “Niko Kadi”, which has gained a lot of traction in recent days.

Leaders of the program say that their main goal is to remove President William Ruto from power in 2027. Ruto is accused, among other things, of failing to fulfill his 2022 campaign promises, tolerating rampant corruption, managing government incompetence, and violating human rights through illegal killings and kidnappings.

How many votes is the ‘Niko Kadi’ group aiming for?

In Mombasa, young people gathered at the offices of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to demand a large registration of their colleagues.

They announced their goal is at least 18 million votes, which they believe will break the established political order after independence.

According to them, their determination is strong throughout the country, and they all intend to make full use of the vote to achieve their vision.

“We are in this movement because our only goal is the voter’s card. We are tired of the way things are going in this country,” said Sheila Wanjiru.

“We have no party or leader…Our goal is 18 million more votes, and the number of registered voters in 2022 and below cannot be compared to the number we are targeting. Ours will be a blocking vote. We will come as a revolution to expel them,” said Charles Mutisya.

Why William Ruto’s administration has become increasingly unpopular

Although Ruto came to power in 2022 through popular vote, his administration has lost favor with citizens who accuse him of failing to fulfill campaign promises.

Public anger peaked in 2024 when that year’s Finance Bill proposed many new taxes, leading to protest large.

Ruto eventually withdrew the bill after claiming that he was following public sentiment, but his government’s image was tarnished by the deaths of protesters during the unrest.

The youth, since then, vowed to punish him at the polls.

Opposition leaders, who have also vowed to make the president the first one-term president in Kenya’s history, have maintained that they do not answer to any political hegemony, saying they are campaigning against all former politicians regardless of their current orientation.
