Elvis Opiyo, a member of The Lighthouse Ministers, was arrested on Sunday, March 22, after public outrage over the attack on Clare.
On Tuesday, March 17, Lucas Ochieng’, allegedly hired by Opiyo, attacked Clare with acid in Kibera, causing serious injuries and admission to the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Sonko brought the case to the public by spreading it on social media, denouncing the rise of gender-based violence.
He vowed to find justice for Clare, 24, and offered a reward of KSh 50,000 to anyone who would give information about his arrest.
Detailed information on how Elvis Opiyo was caught
A few hours after announcing the gift, an anonymous person who shared the story with Sonko revealed that a woman known to the victim and Opiyo tricked the suspect, who had traveled to Oyugis town in Homa Bay, to come to Nairobi, claiming that Clare wanted to talk to him.
“Another woman, a friend of Clare’s who knows her ex-boyfriend, has lied to her that Clare wants to talk to her. She is on her way to Nairobi,” said the unnamed caller.

After hearing the news, Opiyo boarded a bus to Nairobi. The caller, whose name has been withheld, along with Clare’s friend and brother (Dan), then arranged a meeting at a hotel near KNH.
“He has arrived. We are planning a meeting at the common hall and we don’t want to wait for him. Just organize your officers, I will find a place and come back to you,”
Dan told Sonko. “The suspect who attacked the woman with acid is coming to Upper Hill. I want him arrested. Cooperate with the OCS, the operation team, and those I instructed,” Sonko told the police officer.
During the conference call, Dan informed the Opiyo area officer and proceeded to specify their meeting place inside the hospital.
“We will meet at a popular restaurant in the hospital, in the public parking lot. The sister will be drinking tea with him,” Dan said.
Sonko alerted the OCS of Kibera, and shortly after, the plainclothes arresting officer, after seeing the lady and the suspect, informed Sonko and arrested him.

“This one should not be released at all. I have all the documents, including the first attack,” the officer told Sonko, who demanded to take all the witnesses to the station before handing over the gifts.
Sonko, an advocate against GBV, facilitated the arrest process to ensure Opiyo’s arrest
Opiyo appeared in Kibera Magistrates’ Court on Monday, March 23, and will be remanded for five days while detectives complete their investigation.
CCTV footage captures Opiyo while in the hospital Clare was rushed?
CCTV footage captured Opiyo loitering at the health center along Ngong Road, where he was first admitted before being transferred to KNH.
Opiyo looked distraught when he saw Clare being brought in in a very bad condition.
However, those who had accompanied the 24-year-old woman at the station were not convinced by her behavior.
One of the good Samaritans was seen attacking Opiyo on the wall, raising questions about how he got into the hall so soon after the attack.
