On 9 March 2026, Azimio launched a major reshuffle of its top leadership, removing several executives.

Those removed include Junet Mohamed, the long-time leader of the parliamentary group and secretary general; Hassan Joho, former governor of Mombasa and minister of minerals; Secretary of the Cabinet of Cooperative Societies Wycliffe Oparanya; Sabina Chege, member of parliament to be appointed; Minister of Energy and Petroleum Opiyo Wandayi; and Abdi Noor Omar Farah, member of the union council.

Azimio defended the move, citing conflicts of interest such as appointments to public offices and alleged ties to rival political factions.

Locals claimed that these changes were necessary to simplify leadership and strengthen unity.

The NLP, led by Augustus Muli, has rejected the change outright. In another complaint to the Registrar of Political Parties, the party insists that no positions were announced before the removal, making those replaced invalid.

The party also opposes the process which violated the Political Parties Act 2011 and the Constitution of Kenya 2010, both of which mandate internal dispute resolution procedures.

The party also reiterated its long-standing objection to the increase in Kalonzo Musyoka as the leader of the Resolution, and called the appointment normal and unresolved.

The NLP maintains that the issue must be resolved under the union’s National Executive Council (NEC). Muli’s statement pointed to several procedural errors.

He questioned the legitimacy of the NEC meeting that approved the change, convened by Philip Kisia, whose appointment as Azimio’s CEO has not yet been challenged.

In addition, he claimed that the NEC meeting has increased the number of members, while only four officials of the government gazette were present – raising doubts about the quorum.

The NLP also claimed that representatives from outside the Declaration, including the Decentralization Empowerment Party (DEP), were allowed to participate in decision-making, undermining union freedom.

The dispute underscores a growing rift within the Declaration, a coalition long plagued by internal strife.

The NLP’s request could stall the amendment of the Declaration, delaying its ability to form a coalition before the 2027 elections.

The unresolved leadership dispute involving Musyoka could destroy the structure of the Azimio command, with warring parties questioning its legitimacy.

The party insists Resolution must return to its Internal Dispute Resolution System (IDRM) and submit its decisions to NEC arbitration.

In order for the Declaration to be a legitimate outfit, it must first follow the law. Most of the cooperatives have been renewed, they are still waiting for the money that was supposed to be distributed to all members from the government.
