BBC reports that Ifenyinwa Ndulue-Nonso had arrived in the UK with an impressive career.

How Nonso got a nursing job

In his application to the University of Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, he described “extensive” experience helping patients in complex specialties, including endocrinology and gastroenterology.

He also claimed to have provided medical nutrition therapy for conditions ranging from cancer and HIV to eating disorders and malnutrition.

How Nonso’s lies were exposed

Concerns were first raised by colleagues who noted gaps in his knowledge during routine interactions.

Things escalated when his manager, Curtis Jones, returned from vacation and held an introductory meeting with him.

According to the court’s findings, his description of previous experience did not match what he had presented in his application.

Senior staff soon began to voice their concerns. Lorna Haywood, clinical leader of critical care, explained her alarm at what she discovered during basic inquiries.

When asked which organ follows the stomach in the digestive system, Ndulue-Nonso is said to have struggled and even after being asked gave the wrong answer.

“This is basic anatomy that is fundamental to the role of a nutritionist,” Haywood later told the panel.

What questions did Nonso fail?

The issues escalated into more than one question as evidence presented to the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service revealed that Ndulue-Nonso was unable to correctly calculate the patient’s Body Mass Index.

In addition, he could not recognize the symptoms of dysphagia or explain the risks associated with feeding patients who have swallowing problems.

He was also unable to interpret basic biochemistry results or explain how to manage feeding sickness, a competency essential to his role.

In one surprising exchange, he mistakenly said that the gall bladder was “part of the kidney, where urine is stored”, ja concern that further emphasized the concern among his colleagues.

As the investigation deepened, Ndulue-Nonso was suspended in March, and by August, he had been fired.

Nonso has been deregistered

In his defense before the court, he admitted that although he had “some knowledge” of the role, he did not have the level of expertise he had previously claimed.

The panel concluded that his actions amounted to “planned and sustained” dishonesty, and eventually struck him off the academic register.

Despite the seriousness of the case, the hospital’s belief emphasized that patient safety has not been compromised.

A spokesman said staff discovered the issues “within days” and ensured he was closely supervised while a quick investigation was carried out.
