Although the area is well known for agricultural activities, especially tea cultivation, the couple has chosen a different path by raising rare wild animals.
Japhet Sugut and his wife, Esther, surprised the residents after introducing a crocodile into their compound, an unusual and daring decision.
What other animals does Japhet keep? They set aside part of their large farm to create a safe and suitable habitat for the animals while ensuring they are properly managed.

“I started this journey in 2014 when I asked for permission to set aside part of my farm for religious and recreational purposes. Later, I applied for a license from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to breed wild animals. They sent a researcher to inspect the environment and determine which animals could be bred here. Finally, I was given permission to breed crocodiles, ostriches, and turtles,” he said.
The decision was not easy for the family at first, as they were afraid to live near the animals, especially crocodiles.
How does Esther clean the crocodile pond?
However, Esther finally accepted the situation and even took on the responsibility of caring for the reptiles. He explained how he takes care of their home, noting that he cleans their area when it is safe to do so.
“When the crocodiles are in another pond, that’s when I clean the empty one. I also make sure they are full before cleaning, because when they are hungry it is very dangerous. No one else can clean that area because they recognize me by my smell. When I call them ‘Crocodile, crocodile,’ they raised their heads waiting, whether to be fed or interact,” he said.
Crocodiles are fed rabbits and chickens, with each eating at least one and a half kilos of food every day.
Is it normal to keep crocodiles at home?
At first, the neighbors feared for their safety, but as time passed, they got used to the presence of the animals.
The unique project has also brought economic benefits to the area, as it attracts tourists and generates income for the family as well as the local community.
“This is not a common thing to see. It is very rare to keep crocodiles at home, so we were afraid at first. However, after a while, we realized they were not a threat, and we accepted the situation,” said Macurin Tirien, a resident of the area.
Japhet expressed his intention to expand the project in the future by introducing other animals such as lions, snakes, and monkeys.
