Saumu died on 7 March, and his body was taken to a mortuary in Makadara by his devoted daughter, Nyevu Jefa, for preservation.
However, he said that the body was later moved without his consent and taken to another morgue in Kilifi by his mother’s estranged husband.
Nyevu and his aunts gathered at the funeral home in Makadara, crying loudly, screaming, and wailing for their loved one as they asked the workers to release the body.

He explained that his mother was ill for more than two years before finally resting.
“I have been taking care of my mother for all the years she was sick. When she died, I was the one who brought her to this place. Later, my documents were lost, my national identity card, passport, and even the funeral permit,” he said.
How was Saumu Luvuno’s body stolen?
Nyevu claimed that the man secretly cooperated with the mochari attendant to take the body of his late mother.
Saumu’s sister, Mwajuma Kombo, said that when they discovered the body was missing from Makadara, they traveled to Kilifi and confirmed where it was.
According to her, the estranged husband never existed or fulfilled traditional obligations, including paying the dowry, so he had no right to bury her.
“My sister died on Saturday, and the man came the following Thursday saying he wanted the body. We told him the responsibility of burying her was ours because he did not pay the dowry,” he noted.
The family has demanded that the body be returned to Makadara and that legal action be taken against those involved in moving it.
Nyevu and his aunts reported the matter at the Tononoka Police Station, thus initiating the case.
Julius Gogo, a human rights defender who supports Saumu’s family, said the mortuary attendants have been informed that the body is under investigation and cannot be given for burial to anyone at the moment.
“We want to know how these people were able to get the daughter’s documents as well as the funeral permit,” he said.
Body theft in Nakuru mochari
In other news, TUKO.co.ke reported that a group of people invaded the mochari of the Hospital Nakuru War Memorial and stole the body.
The head of the center, Patricia Musale, said the deceased had been in the hospital for six months due to a family dispute regarding the right to bury him.
Despite the court decision that gave the woman’s children the right to perform the funeral, the debt of KSh 921,000 had not yet been paid, which caused the body to continue to remain in the facility.
