A man from Uasin Gishu will find his family after being released from prison where he was imprisoned for 37 years

A man from Burnt Forest, Rurigi village, Uasin Gishu county, has finally got his freedom after spending many years in prison.

Joseph Ng’ang’a Ngugi was incarcerated in Shimo la Tewa Prison for more than three and a half decades, having been isolated from his community for a long time.

When was Joseph Ngugi imprisoned?

He was imprisoned in 1988 and later his sentence was reduced to 37 years after an appeal, he finally got his freedom in January 2026.

Although it was a joy for him as he looked forward to reuniting with his family, he faced an unexpected challenge.

“When he returned home, he discovered that his family left Burnt Forest in 2007 during the post-election violence and later settled in refugee camps in Nakuru. Since then, he has been unable to trace them.

The last time his mother, Grace Waithira, saw him was in 1991. His father, Johnson Ngugi, who worked with Kenya Railways in Eldoret, died in 1983. His two sisters, Teresiah Wangari and Maria Njoki, died before he was imprisoned. He left his younger siblings, Ruth Njoki and Esther Wambui, who were four and two years old at the time,” explained Sammy Ondimu Ngare..

Ngare also posted a picture of Ngugi standing near the shop M-Moneywearing a brown hoodie and looking directly at the camera.

He added that Ruth Njoki is believed to be the mother of a baby girl named Grace, although there is no further information about Esther Wambui.

The post went viral, prompting social media users to express mixed opinions.

Toiyoi Agisa: “The last time his mother visited him was 35 years ago. Something may have happened after 1991. His father and sisters are dead, and his brothers may not know him. The painful truth is that he may be alone. It is wise now to look ahead and help him start life anew.”

Phelipe Lobos: “He needs help even after finding his family. Psychological support is very important. May God give him the strength to move forward.”

Hèĺàñè Ķèmmý: “Why didn’t they visit him in prison? It’s time for him to accept the situation and start a new life. If they really cared, he wouldn’t be looking for them now.”
