“The instructions were clear—within 48 hours, we needed a real action plan to deal with the floods. I have received the report, and the implementation is now underway,” Sakaja said on Thursday, March 19.

The operation includes demolishing structures that have constricted waterways, including areas where rivers had been reduced to smaller channels unable to handle large flows of water.
“Here at Westgate, the entire river was closed in a small dam. We are opening it again to restore the good flow of water,” the governor said.
Large rigs have already been deployed along key stretches of the river to clear debris, dig waterways, and remove illegal developments that have blocked natural drainage.
The governor warned that all structures built along waterways will be removed without exception and urged the affected residents and developers to leave voluntarily before the implementation.
“This is not a one-time exercise. It is a continuous effort to restore our rivers and prevent further loss of life and property,” he said.

Which areas are scheduled for demolition activities in Nairobi?
Several areas have been earmarked for implementation, including Kirichwa in Kilimani, parts of Westlands, parts of the city center (CBD), and areas downstream of the Nairobi River.
At the same time, multi-agency teams are clearing blocked drainage systems and making urgent road repairs in flood-affected areas, with progress reports expected every week.

Sakaja also called for public accountability, citing illegal dumping and non-compliance with approved construction plans as major contributors to the flood disaster.
“Permissions are given in accordance with the law, but some developers deviate from the approved plans. This is a shared responsibility that must be addressed,” he said, urging regulatory agencies such as the National Construction Authority (NCA) to strengthen enforcement.
Nairobi Rivers Commission Commissioner Mumo Musuva confirmed that joint activities are ongoing along the main river corridors.
“We are working from Kabete Dam through the City Park to Mathare, cleaning up riverside areas and restoring encroached areas,” Musuva said.
He added that important areas in Westlands, Kirichwa, and the upper part of the Nairobi River have been earmarked for rehabilitation.
Authorities have warned that the ongoing heavy rains could worsen the flooding if emergency measures are not continued and have reaffirmed their commitment to implementing a plan to protect lives and property.
What should Kenyans avoid during heavy rains?
In other news, the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) urged Kenyans to be extra cautious during the Idd-ul-Fitr celebrations on Friday, March 20.
KMD says that several parts of the country will receive heavy rain on Friday and continue till Tuesday, March 24.
The department urged Kenyans not to drive or walk in flowing water and to stay away from trees and metal structures during storms and thunderstorms.
