A woman from Tigania, Igembe, Meru county, has mourned following a tragic double tragedy that has left her in great pain.

Selena Kimathi is unhappy after losing her livestock and, more importantly, her beloved husband following a robbery attack in her area.

Kimathi died protecting 300 cows

Tears streamed down his cheeks as he struggled to wipe them away as he faced a great loss.

Kimathi’s husband, a National Police Reserve officer, was guarding more than 300 cattle when he was allegedly shot near suspected criminals.

According to the family, he was shot multiple times and died instantly, leaving Selena and her family devastated.

“I am in a lot of pain because my husband, Kimathi, was killed by criminals. I don’t have even one cow left to take care of the family. When I was in the field, I heard several gunshots. I heard people saying that the cows had disappeared. When I met them, they told me to go back home. I asked them why they were telling me to go back, and that’s when I realized that nothing was right,” she cried.

What is the importance of livestock for the residents of Meru?

The incident left Selena stranded, as her husband left her with nine children to take care of without any support or source of income.

She cried, wondering how she would feed her children and educate them at the same time after the great tragedy.

Her home reflected the difficult economic situation she now faced, which added to her pain as a mother trying to take care of her children.

The pastor, while addressing the locals following the bandit attacks, emphasized the importance of livestock in the area, noting that it represents more than just wealth.

Cattle found after robbery attack in Meru

“Livestock are not only personal property for the family but also school fees, food security, and the dignity of our lives. When cattle are stolen, the community suffers a great economic loss,” he said.

Another leader recalled a past incident where the community lost 120 cattle due to bandits, prompting the government to intervene.

Their efforts paid off, as at least 67 cows were recovered, with the rest promised to be returned in due course.

Although not all the livestock were recovered, it gave a glimmer of hope to the villagers affected by the criminals’ actions.
