Raila was well known as an ardent supporter of the North London club and often expressed his love for the team in public.
How did Arsenal honor Raila Odinga?
A video shared on social media by Raila’s aide, Philip Etale, showed that the Gunners recognized the veteran politician with a special piece of memorabilia during their Premier League clash against Liverpool.
The match, played on January 8, 2026, was organized at the famous Emirates Stadium in London, a venue that Raila had previously visited during his lifetime.
Arsenal honored him by publishing his name on the front page of the game’s official match programme.
The booklet featured pictures of defender Gabriel Magalhaes and midfielder Martin Zubimendi celebrating a goal from the previous match.
The page was designed in Arsenal’s colors and featured a tribute message that read:
“Arsenal remembers RT Hon Raila Amollo Odinga.”
According to Etale, the match software was sent to him from London in January but arrived later than expected due to shipping delays.
“It’s from our team, Arsenal. Can your team stop it? It was sent from London to Nairobi, addressed to me in memory of Raila, die-hard fan of Arsenal Football Club. It’s in memory of Raila. Arsenal forever, thank you for remembering your number one fan. Gunners forever,” he said.
Etale added that he plans to hand over the booklet to Raila’s widow, Ida Odingaso that it can be preserved as part of the memories of the family of the late national leader.

How did Raila Odinga die?
Raila died on October 15, 2025, sending the country into mourning. The veteran politician had traveled to India for treatment when he reportedly suffered a heart attack during a morning walk.
Specialist cardiologists tried to revive him but unfortunately he died.
He was later buried 72 hours later at the family cemetery in Bondo, Kang’o ka Jaramogi, after a national funeral.

Did Arsenal fans mourn Raila Odinga?
A week after Raila’s funeral, a group of Arsenal fans from all over the country visited his final resting place Kang’o Ka Jaramogi.
Supporters gathered around his grave, singing the club’s anthem and chanting ‘Arsenal’ as a tribute. Videos from the tour quickly went viral, due to his loyalty to the club.
The tour also sparked emotional posts on social media, with fans who were unable to attend sharing their own tributes.
