On March 6, Nairobi was hit by heavy rains that caused flooding, causing chaos and widespread destruction and death in the city.

It has been revealed that a total of 24 lives were lost in the great flood, including one young man who had just started doing well in his profession and had recently won a prestigious award at his place of work.

According to a person identified as Eugene Orimbo, the young man worked under his friend Eric Mutua, who was the project manager. Mutua was stuck at the T Mall Roundabout on Langata Road after leaving a work meeting and he kindly gave his younger colleague a lift home.

Why was Orimbo tired of the mortuary process?

“The young student had won the Best Employee Award, and was being taken to where he was when he got stuck,” said Orimbo.

“In the beginning, the young man was answering all the calls; we were talking to him until 3:12 at night, but after a while, he stopped answering completely. Much later, we had to identify his body at the Nairobi Funeral Home and unfortunately, it was confirmed that he had died. This is the person we were talking to, the person we had plans with, even that evening,” he added.

According to Orimbo, the process of finding their loved ones has been tedious, from identification to postmortem; they would like the government to help them and make the process easier.

“We don’t think enough has been done so far. We believe this could have been avoided, as there was advice but unfortunately, it was ignored. Not much has been done, and we have paid the price of losing two very promising young people. Let these be the last,” he pleaded.

The Nairobi floods led to criticism from the national and county governments of Nairobi about poor drainage systems and urban planning.
