Nairobi: The family of a woman who was swept away by the flood in Uhuru Park during the heavy rains that fell on March 6, has given the details of the cause of the sad incident.

Rose Akamurana had appeared at work in Athi River on her way Kawangware meet his son. However, his journey was suddenly cut short by a torrential downpour.

How did Rose Akamurana die?

A picture of Akamurana went viral on social media, showing him trapped by a pipe as flood waters washed away the area.

“I was the one who was with him in Kawangware. He left for work on Friday and was caught in the rain on the evening of his return. His body was later discovered in Uhuru Park,” said the woman who hosted him.

His family managed to identify his body at the City mortuary, where 24 other bodies are kept.

According to Citizen TV, 14 bodies have been identified, while 10 have not been identified. He was among several people who died following the heavy rain that caused great damage to communities, property and infrastructure across the country.

Meanwhile, several families are still searching for their loved ones who went missing on the day of the disaster. The family of the businessman, Beatrice Akinyi, expressed their concern after they could not find him following their last contact hours before the flood.

“We don’t know if he died, washed away by the flood, or in the hospital. We are in the dark. We came here, and we have been informed that he is not there,” his brother, Edward Tuju, said.

“I called him around 12 p.m., and he said, ‘I’m still standing on the table, clinging to the roof. This water is killing us. Just pray for us.’ I called an hour later, but her line was not available,” said Beatrice’s friend, Lilian Akinyi.

What did the Kenya Met say about the heavy rain?

Amid efforts to evacuate residents in flood-prone areas, the Kenya Meteorological Department urged Kenyans to prepare for moderate to moderate rains and possible risks of landslides and floods.

Among the counties that will be affected are Nairobi, Nyeri, Kajiado, Kakamega, Isiolo, Narok, Homa Bay, Mombasa, Machakos, Garissa, Makueni, Kiambu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi, among others. A meteorologist predicted that rain may continue in various regions, so the need to move to avoid serious consequences.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health urged Kenyans to beware of flood-related diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, diarrhea and malaria.

Secretary General of Health Mary Muthoni said that diseases caused by water spread more in flooded areas and through contact with dirty water.

He advised citizens to either boil drinking water, chlorinate it, or use approved treatment methods and maintain hygiene by frequent hand washing and safe food handling to reduce the risk.
