Kenya Railways has issued a warning to passengers against bringing tools or similar equipment on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

The state corporation clarified its stance on social media in response to a traveler asking if they could carry such gear on the train. According to Kenya Railways, tools fall under the list of restricted items as defined by the Madaraka Express Passenger Service Conditions of Carriage.

”Hello, Tools are among the items restricted on the train, as outlined in the Kenya Railways Corporation Madaraka Express Passenger Service Conditions for Carriage,” the corporation stated.

Kenya Railways has confirmed that tools are among the many items banned from its premises and trains. To boost safety and security, the corporation has released an extensive list of prohibited and restricted items that many travelers might not be aware of.

Key Rules for Your Next Trip

  • Workshop Tools: You cannot bring items like hammers, pliers, and screwdrivers into passenger coaches. If you have these tools, you must hand them over to Kenya Railways security at the station, where they will handle them according to safety protocols.

  • Bicycles: The corporation currently does not allow bicycles on passenger trains due to operational limits. If you are traveling with a bike, you should talk to station management for advice before you head out.

  • Alcohol and Smoking: You are strictly forbidden from bringing alcoholic drinks into stations or onto the trains. Additionally, smoking is banned across all Kenya Railways property, including stations and the train coaches themselves.

Kenya Railways has expanded its list of banned items to include everyday grooming and household products.

Passengers can no longer carry aerosol sprays of any kind. This includes common items such as hair sprays, body sprays, insecticides, shaving cream, and sunscreen. Even pepper spray, often carried for self-defense, is strictly prohibited on both the trains and within station premises.

Strict Rules on Weapons and Hazardous Materials

The corporation enforces a zero-tolerance policy for dangerous goods. The following items are completely banned:

  • Firearms and Ammunition: While firearms are prohibited, registered owners must notify the Kenya Railways Security team before they arrive at the station to receive professional guidance and assistance.

  • Explosives and Pyrotechnics: This includes fireworks, flares, and even dynamite.

  • Flammable Liquids and Solids: You cannot carry turpentine, kerosene, petrol, paints, or adhesives.

  • Fire Starters: Lighters (including butane, electric, or battery-powered novelty versions) and matchboxes are not allowed.

  • Compressed Gases: Both flammable and poisonous gases, such as propane, gasoline, and aqualung cylinders, are banned.

Specific Restrictions: Batteries and Trophies

Security remains high regarding electronics and wildlife products:

  • Security Cases: Any boxes or suitcases containing lithium batteries or pyrotechnic materials are forbidden.

  • Wildlife Trophies: The transport of animal trophies, including wild animal skins, hides, horns, and cowrie shells, is strictly against the rules.

Kenya Railways has also made it clear that illegal or controlled drugs, including cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and mandrax, are strictly forbidden on all trains and premises.

The ban extends to live animals and pets, as well as hazardous materials like oxidizing substances, disabling devices (such as tear gas), and poisons. To keep the rules flexible for safety, Kenya Railways reserves the right to block any other substance not specifically named if they believe it poses a risk to the train, the stations, or the public.

Know Before You Go

The corporation explains that these strict rules exist solely to protect passengers and staff. Travelers should review these limits before heading to the station to avoid any delays or having to leave items behind.

Standard Luggage Limits

While safety items are restricted, your standard travel gear must also fit within specific size and weight limits:
