Many Kenyans have been reflecting on the legacy of the late Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr, Johana Ng’eno, who died last weekend in a helicopter crash in Nandi County.

The former Member of Parliament was a much-loved leader in Narok County, where he served the people as Member of Parliament for three consecutive terms, after entering politics early as a young man.

While Kenyans continue to mourn and console his family — his wife and children — many have been remembering with a smile the times when he was teased for remaining single for a long time.

During his wedding in 2018, the former Deputy President, William Rutohe laughed at her as he welcomed her into married life.

“I am happy now that you can settle down as a family member. The challenges we had with you in the past are over. Now you are an old man. Welcome to the club of married people,” said Ruto during the wedding event which was attended by celebrities and created a buzz.

For a long time, the member of parliament was teased for being single, and even pressured to marry by his close family, including his mother, as well as his political friends.

His mother often reminded him of his desire to have grandchildren, urging him to find a wife.

“Son, please marry, I want grandchildren. Or do you want to bring me grandchildren when I am too old to see?” he once told him, according to the newspaper Nairobi News.

Why did Ng’eno wait until he was 44 before he got married?

In a previous interview with TV47, the politician revealed that he delayed marriage because he first wanted to achieve his goals before settling down in family life.

He recalled that even the residents of Emurua Dikirr pressured him to marry, joking that they would deny him the vote in the 2022 election because he had no wife or children.

“My parents started telling me to think about marriage while I was still in school, but I refused. When I was in university, they kept pressuring me, but I refused. I had decided that I must first fulfill all my dreams and goals. When I entered politics, the voters reminded me that I am single. I told them that the parliamentary seat is my first wife,” he said with a laugh.

After entering parliament for his first term, Ng’eno said his marriage plans had to be put on hold, as he dedicated his time to serving his people.

“When I was looking for a second term, the voters warned me that they would not vote for me again for six months. I had time to reflect on all the achievements I had achieved — getting my degree, master’s degree, and even becoming a Member of Parliament. It was really the right time,” he said.

On August 18, 2018, the politician said “I do” to his beautiful bride, Nayianoi Ntutu. By the time of his death on Saturday, February 28, he was blessed with two children.
