President William Ruto has sparked debates in Nairobi after publicly supporting Lang’ata Member of Parliament Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, for the capital’s senate seat in the 2027 General Election.

The head of state made the remarks while engaging residents during a development visit to Nairobi, where he was inspecting ongoing government projects.

While introducing the leaders accompanying him, Ruto boldly named the first-term MP as a future senator from the capital.

“I am here with Jalang’o, our Nairobi 2027 senator. Give him a round of applause,” Ruto said, drawing fans from the crowd.

“Another impactful day on the road with the honorable president. Thank you, Dagoretti North and Dagoretti South, for the warm welcome. We visited development projects completed in two Nairobi states,” Jalang’o said in a Facebook post.

The endorsement marks an increase in political solidarity between the president and the speaker, who has placed himself in an important position in Nairobi politics.

Jalang’o, a former comedian and media presenter turned politician, openly declared his intention to oust the Senator Edwin Sifuna in the year 2027.

Sifuna is currently serving as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement after the party’s decision to remove him from power was temporarily suspended by the Court of Political Parties.

At the same time, Jalang’o has repeatedly questioned the appearance and performance of the senator in the capital.

He has accused Sifuna of “lack of action” on important county issues, including failure to hold the Governor’s government properly accountable Johnson regarding service delivery issues.

Can Jalang’o defeat Sifuna for the position of Nairobi senator in 2027?

TUKO.co.ke previously reported that Jalang’o expressed great confidence in his ability to win the Nairobi senate seat.

The MP said he was ready to leave his current position and face Sifuna face to face, describing the contest as a direct political battle.

Addressing supporters at a recent rally, he signaled that he would campaign hard and insisted that there would be no backing down from the race.

During the event, which was attended by local leaders and several politicians, Jalang’o positioned himself as a strong opponent. He said that the mobilization of the locals would give him an advantage and emphasized that some opponents were ignoring his ambition.

He said that he would face Sifuna directly and suggested that he had the necessary support to push for a competitive campaign.
