On Wednesday, February 11, the National Central Committee of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) (NEC) decided to remove him from power due to his opposition to the cooperation agreement between the party and the President William Ruto.

Women’s representative of kiss Catherine Omanyo was appointed acting secretary general, but Sifuna moved to the Political Party Disputes Court, which halted her removal from office.

On Thursday, February 26, the court extended the order, allowing him to remain in office pending a full hearing.

Despite being pushed in, Sifuna has continued to oppose the ODM-UDA agreement, declaring it politically unacceptable.

At the same time, Sifuna and his allies, among them the governor of Siaya James Orengo and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, have been holding Linda Mwananchi meetings to protest the meetings of Linda Ground’s opponent linked to the group of the party’s leader, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga.

This comes as the Nairobi MP’s influence before the 2027 General Election continues to grow, especially among young people.

Political analyst and pilot Iain Njiraini told TUKO.co.ke that the emerging Sifuna group has injected new energy into a political space that has long been dominated by two rival factions.

“It is surprising how in every election cycle there are two opposing parties. This time we have a third group, which is coming with a bang, led by Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna. Interestingly, we have never seen it happen. That Sifuna would lead a serious movement, and everyone turns their heads. And indeed, it gets a lot of support,” Njiaini said.

What is Njiaini’s advice for Sifuna?

According to Njiaini, the current political environment gives Sifuna a strategic opportunity to redefine his role beyond that of a party spokesperson.

He said that Sifuna has changed from working within the traditional structures of the party to building a broad political identity that focuses on the participation of ordinary people.

“If 2027 is a chessboard, then Sifuna needs to stop playing like someone’s bishop and start thinking like a queen. Right now, she carries the image of a leader punished for talking. That narrative may suit her,” he said.

He added that by resisting his removal through legal means and continuing Linda Mwananchi’s meetings, Sifuna is putting himself in a new position from a party spokesman to a broad person who focuses on people.

Njiaini warned Sifuna against running into alliances with prominent opposition figures who may no longer be supported among the youth.

He said that young voters are increasingly skeptical of what they see as recycled political alliances and elite discourse that do not reflect their aspirations.

“The biggest mistake would be to rush into cooperation with known faces of the opposition that are no longer pleasing to General Z. Many young people are tired of recycled alliances and talk of elites. If he is seen standing next to leaders who do not trust him, he quickly loses credibility,” Njiaini warned.

What does the future hold for Sifuna?

Elsewhere, senior lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui said Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has become a political force that cannot be easily contained within ODM.

He said that attempts to pressure or isolate Sifuna would only increase his position as public anger against the government continues to grow.

Kinyanjui claimed the political situation has changed, with many citizens identifying with Sifuna’s positions instead of internal party groups.

He suggested that some leaders were wrong to think that the senator could be silenced, adding that the support of the people was increasing in different areas.
