Ruto led the 46th graduation parade of the Kenya Prisons Service at the Ruiru Prison Staff Training College on Thursday, February 26.
When will Kenyan prison officers get a salary increase?
The President said his administration is committed to providing the necessary resources to strengthen disciplined services in the country, increase morale and improve welfare.
He added that improving the welfare and working environment of security officers is one of the important reforms.
Ruto announced a phased salary increase of 36% for first level officers and 24% for senior officers as recommended by the Maraga Task Force.
“We have increased salaries for first-level officers by 36% and 24% to the highest level since 2024 under phases I and II as recommended by the Maraga task force, which I appointed. The third phase of the salary review will come into force on July 1, 2026,” the national leader said in a statement posted on his social media pages.
How will the government improve the welfare of prison guards?
At the same time, Ruto noted that the government will build 28,000 institutional houses, of which 30% are currently under construction, to reduce the housing shortage among prison guards.
The President emphasized that the government has also improved access to health services for prisoners, with 56% of prisoners registered with the Community Health Authority (SHA), and all prisoners are expected to be registered under the program.

In other news, a looming dispute is looming between the government and civil servants over plans to switch them from permanent and retirement contracts to five-year contracts.
Cabinet will be presented with reform proposals by Cabinet Secretary for the Public Service (CS) Geoffrey Ruku, which, if approved, will force more than one million Kenyan civil servants to work under new conditions.
Ruku said the ministry is working on a plan to revise the terms of service for 1,054,425 workers retiring at the age of 60.
