In the post, Wafula revealed that her son, Declan, was convicted of preparing to commit a criminal offense and was sentenced to four years in prison.

Was Wafula Buke’s son responsible for the crime that caused him to be sentenced?

According to Wafula, he hoped that 21-year-old Declan would be jailed for seven years for full rehabilitation, but his hopes did not bear fruit.

“My son Declan was jailed for four years last year. He was accused of planning to commit a crime. Considering how I knew him, he really needed to go to jail. I thought he needed seven years for full rehabilitation, but the judge gave him a little,” he said.

He urged Kenyans to pray for his speedy recovery, noting that he was not fully responsible for his condition.

He cited his difficult upbringing, characterized by single parentage and searching for an absent father, as factors that contributed to his character.

“Maternity alone bothered him a little. Another challenge was an ‘absent’ father who was looking forward to pursuing other goals. At the age of 21, there is hope to recover from bad behavior. Friends wish my son a speedy recovery,” he urged.

However, the response was emotional, with many arguing for Declan’s reformation outside prison, fearing that he could emerge fully reformed or strengthened by criminal associations.

How did the Kenyans advise Wafula Buke?

Edwin Shivakale Scheme

“There is no major reformation in prison as far as I know. He will meet hard criminals there, and the possibility of learning his crooked ways is great. He may prove to be a worse criminal than you expected. Prisons are only good for deterrence, and especially for criminals or prisoners whose chances of reformation are very small.”

Collins-Harrison Odhiambo

“The world will pass. Society stigmatizes everything, and is very judgmental. He will definitely emerge better if you give him the necessary perspective support. As you asked, I wish him a full recovery.”

“Prison is not a place I would want anyone to be, even if he was preparing to commit a crime. I think rehabilitation can be done outside of prison, and that is only for the parents, whether they are mad or not: that is what society should do. Anyway, sorry Brother. The horse has run away.”
