Kizaazaa as the Family Refuses to Allow the Widow to Prepare Funeral Prayers for Her Murdered Husband

  • A woman’s plans to perform Islamic prayers after the funeral for her murdered husband were put on hold on Tuesday, February 24
  • The woman had invited a group of Muslim women for the celebration, but her husband’s family, including his mother, came out against it.
  • The mother and other family members explained why they were against the traditions of their relatives who were killed by unknown people in their home

Trans Practice: There was chaos in the village of Kapcheplanget in Cherang’any province when a section of Muslims clashed with family members of a man who was killed by unknown people.

The deceased, Lopedo Kanda, a former employee of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), was killed in his home, and his funeral took place about 40 days ago.

Why did the family stop the widow from doing her husband’s rituals after the funeral.

On Tuesday, February 24, a group of Muslim believers led by Edwina Odero, who is Kanda’s wife, among other women, arrived home from Mombasa for the post-funeral rituals.

The rituals, including Islamic prayers, are usually performed after 40 days from the date of the funeral.

However, some family members claimed that they had not agreed with the traditions despite the widow and her team insisting that they had no bad intentions.

“We did not come here for a celebration but to pray and celebrate 40 days after the death of this man,” Odero told family members, some of whom had traveled from Elgeyo Marakwet to prevent the rituals that would take place on Wednesday, February 25.

However, Esther Kasachan, the mother of a former KPA worker, insisted that her son cannot be celebrated or prayed for until all the killers are brought to justice.

His sentiments were supported by the brother of the deceased, Julius Kanda, who questioned the intentions of those who organized the rituals after the funeral without their participation.

“In our community (the Kalenjins), we celebrate after 40 days, but I want to know who is planning it? Mr. Chief, let these people go because their prayers cannot continue,” Kanda said.

Chief Chepsiror appealed to the two parties to allow the police to complete their investigations before proceeding with the post-burial rituals.

“We managed to restore order in the compound after requesting assistance from the Tuigoin Police Station. Later, we advised that the planned application be suspended until the police complete their investigation,” the chief told TUKO.co.ke.

The widow and other women who had accompanied her left the compound for fear of their safety.
