The Department of Meteorology Warns of Heavy Rain in Selected Counties in the Next 24 Hours

Nairobi – Kenyans should prepare for heavy rains in the next 24 hours according to new information from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

According to the notice, Kenya Met indicated that the rain falling in several parts of the country is expected to continue on Tuesday, February 24.

“The rainfall in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the Highlands to the west and East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, is expected to increase to more than 20mm in 24 hours. Heavy rainfall may increase to more than 30mm in 24 hours on February 24, and spread to the lowlands of the Southeast and the Coastal region, especially the south coast. It is expected to decrease in intensity on February 25, 2026,” Kenya Met said.

Highlands East of the Rift Valley

According to the meteorologist, residents of Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, Nyandarua, and Nairobi should expect rain and thunderstorms expected in a few places tonight.

In the morning, rain is expected in a few places, giving way to sunny periods. Showers and thunderstorms are expected in several places in the afternoon.

North West

Turkana and Samburu counties are expected to experience partly cloudy conditions tonight while sunny spells are expected in the morning.

Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir and Isiolo counties are also expected to experience partly cloudy conditions tonight.

Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta and Kajiado counties will experience rain and thunder in several places tonight.

Beach

The counties of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Tana River will be partly cloudy tonight.

Kenya Met has advised Kenyans in the listed areas to be cautious about possible flooding, warning that flood waters may be seen in areas that have not received much rain.

“Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be cautious about possible flooding. Floodwaters may be seen in areas that have not received much rain, especially downstream. People are advised to avoid driving or walking in moving water or open areas. Updates will be provided quickly if there are any changes,” Kenya Met said.

Did the Kenya Meteorological Department issue flood warnings?

Recently, KMD provided advice to government agencies, including the Presidency, the Minister of Environment, the National Intelligence Service, the Red Cross, and other relevant agencies, to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency preparations.

Residents in affected areas are urged to be alert for possible flooding and avoid passing through flooded areas, whether on foot or in vehicles.
